GOOD Design has rules and I'm not talking about 'horizontal rules'. Yes, you can break them, but first you must know the rule that you are breaking.
If you don't have formal training in graphic design, but your employer has asked you to produce professional looking printed material, then the above book is a good place to start to learn the rules of Typography. Typography is one of the major building blocks of good graphic design and nothing makes a publication look more amateurish than ALL CAPS, centered text and underlines. Except maybe using Comic Sans for your 'corporate correspondence'.
